Background of the Study
Market days in Owerri North have traditionally been pivotal events that foster community integration and economic exchange. These regular gatherings provide a platform for the sale of goods and social interaction, reinforcing cultural traditions and communal bonds. In the past, market days were not only centers of commerce but also venues for cultural performances, storytelling, and communal decision-making. However, rapid urbanization and modernization have begun to alter these traditional practices. Changing consumer habits, infrastructural challenges, and the rise of modern retail outlets have affected the frequency and communal spirit of market days. Recent studies underscore the importance of these events in sustaining local identity and economic stability (Okonkwo, 2023; Nnadi, 2024). This study examines how market days continue to promote community integration amid socio-economic changes and evolving lifestyles (Uche, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the historical importance of market days in Owerri North, modernization and urban expansion have diminished their traditional role in fostering community integration. Changes in consumer behavior and competition from modern retail outlets have led to a decline in both attendance and cultural activities during market days. This erosion threatens the social cohesion and local identity once reinforced through these communal events. There is limited empirical research on how these evolving market practices impact community bonds, necessitating a detailed investigation into their current role and potential for revitalization.
